Songs named after country stars have been a bit of a trend of late. Taylor Swift's 2007 breakthrough single, "Tim McGraw," wasn't really about him but rather a love song in which the singer associated that tune with her ex-beau. Similarly, Heidi Newfield's current hit, "Johnny and June," isn't about Johnny Cash and June Carter but rather about wanting to have a loving relationship like theirs. Now comes Sugarland's "Steve Earle," which is featured on the duo's new No. 1 album, "Love on the Inside." The toe-tapping, twangy tune is both an homage and a plea to the alt-country maverick. "Steve Earle, Steve Earle, please write a song for me," chirps Jennifer Nettles. Why? Because, she sings, he's had many wives whom she's met on his records and become her good friends. She doesn't want to marry Earle; she just wants him to pen her a song, pretty please.
