***UPDATE: The Vignettes canceled out of the festival over the weekend. Stay tuned for a replacement announcement.

Here are other highlights of the second annual Girls Got Rhythm Festival, taking over the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in downtown St. Paul on Friday and Saturday. The full lineup and more details are at GirlsGotRhythmFest.com.

The Avengers: Opening for the Sex Pistols' final, fateful show at Winterland in their native San Francisco circa 1977 made singer Penelope Houston and her bandmates a permanent footnote in punk-rock history. They would earn deserved respect two decades later when Lookout! Records (Green Day's old label) issued a compilation of their old recordings, and Eddie Vedder invited them out at a 2006 Pearl Jam concert to sing their "American in Me." They have occasionally reunited since then. (Friday's headliner)

Gateway District: This smirky, choppy local quartet is made up of local punk vets better known from their earlier, more serious but not more entertaining bands, including co-leaders Maren Macosko of the Soviettes and Carrie Tennant of the Salteens. (Friday)

Sugar Stems: One of Milwaukee's best-loved current bands, the coed quartet specializes in sunny, Kinks-meets-Bangles power-pop. Their second album, "Can't Wait," just dropped stateside on Dirtnap Records after an earlier European release. (Saturday)

Marilu & the Machetes: All the way from Pisa, Italy, this surf-punk quartet is fronted by loudly dressed and colorfully voiced singer Mariluisa Fagiani, who also heads a "girls only" record label.
