MN MUSIC-ON-A-STICKFriday: Thanks to Garrison "Uncle Gary" Keillor's rare decision not to broadcast "A Prairie Home Companion" from the State Fair grandstand this year, his younger Minnesota Public Radio brethren at the Current (89.3 FM) were given the night to do with as they please. What they came up with should please two generations of Minnesota music fans. Beloved '80s/'90s favorites Semisonic (above, at the 2006 Macy's Day of Music in Minneapolis) and the Jayhawks are sharing the stage with current scene darlings Dessa and Jeremy Messersmith. Dessa's the poetic starlet of the Doomtree hip-hop crew and leads her own powerhouse band. Singer/songwriter Messersmith even made an album about cemeteries sound sweet. As for those "Closing Time" hitmakers, Semisonic earned renewed raves off a benefit show in May but still performs rarely, what with singer Dan Wilson's songwriting career rocketing off his Adele work. Alt-twang heroes the Jayhawks are wrapping up touring behind last year's reunion album, "Mockingbird Time," and they may not be back for a while. Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles open. (5 p.m. Fri. $35. Minnesota State Fair grandstand. 1-800-514-3849.)
