Irvin Mayfield will bring his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra to Minneapolis in December for the Minnesota Orchestra's Jazz Series.
Irvin Mayfield brings his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra to Minneapolis next December as part of the Minnesota Orchestra's 2012-13 Jazz Series.
Mayfield, the trumpet virtuoso, will play on a program directed by Sarah Hicks on Dec. 8 at the Minneapolis Convention Center auditorium. Broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien will be part of the program, reading a modernized version of Clement Moore's "'Twas the Night before Christmas."
On Jan. 20, vocalists Dianne Reeves, Angelique Kidjo and Lizz Wright will perform separately and together in a program entitled "Sing the Truth."
The third piece of the jazz season will be April 5, 2013, when the Preservation Hall Jazz Band returns for a concert with the dance company Trey McIntyre Project.
The orchestra also has announced the schedule for next seasons's "Inside the Classics" series, featuring Hicks and host Sam Bergman of the viola section. The concerts include a relaxed exploration of a particular composer in the first half of the evening, and then a full performance after intermission.
Brahms' First Symphony is the subject of the first program, on Feb. 8, 2013. Then comes a look at Prokofiev's 1935 ballet score to "Romeo and Juliet," on April 19.
The series' third program, on July 25, will be one of the first heard in the renovated Orchestra Hall. It focuses on Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra."
What's on tap at VocalEssence
The choral group opens the year Oct. 19, at the Cathedral of St. Paul with "Romance in E minor," featuring the German romantics Mendelssohn, Brahms and Bruckner. Helmuth Rilling guest conducts.
The Cuban chorus Schola Cantorum Coralina will appear Nov. 10 at House of Hope Presbyterian in St. Paul. Alina Orraca is the conductor.
"Welcome Christmas" this year will have five performances, the first two weekends of December. The program features work from Menotti's "Amahl," Dominick Argento and Ottorino Respighi.
On Feb. 17, Marlissa Hudson will perform as Marian Anderson in VocalEssence's "Witness" program at the Ordway Center and the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble joins the chorus for a program of Percy Grainger music on March 9 at Ted Mann Concert Hall.
On April 26-27 at Ted Mann, Philip Brunelle conducts a concert version of Benjamin Britten's opera, "Paul Bunyan." The program features Don Shelby as the voice of Bunyan and Pop Wagner as the narrator.
The Star of Wonder young person's concert will be Dec. 8 and the Cantaré Community Concert is May 21.
