Minnesota Orchestra leads local nominees A Minnesota Orchestra recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 was nominated for best orchestral performance. The CD, which also features the Minnesota Chorale, is the third of five CDs devoted to the Beethoven symphonies, all conducted by music director Osmo Vänskä, who has never won a Grammy. • Prince, another Minnesota perennial at the Grammys, is vying for best male R&B vocal performance for "Future Baby Mama" (from his CD "Planet Earth") and best song for a movie or TV show for "The Song of the Heart" (from "Happy Feet"). • Brian Setzer, the Stray Cats frontman who moved to Minnesota a couple of years ago, is a classical-crossover finalist for "Wolfgang's Big Night Out," featuring swing adaptations of familiar classical pieces. • St. Louis Park native Peter Himmelman's "My Green Kite" is up for best musical album for children. • Grammy-winning Windom, Minn., native Maria Schneider, who has made a name for herself as a jazz composer and bandleader, is competing for best large jazz ensemble recording ("Sky Blue") and best instrumental composition ("Cerulean Skies").
