While mainstream Americans chide superstar performers for turning political, music fans across Africa have embraced this South African singer since apartheid's ruin in the late '80s because of his unflinchingly topical songs. Dube (that's "doo-bay") sings with Peter Tosh's fire but also has Bob Marley's grace. He's touring behind a new album, "Respect." (9 p.m. Mon., First Avenue. $18-$20.)
This young star of Puerto Rican heritage has become the Twin Cities' best-known purveyor of reggaeton (reggae/calypso + hip-hop), now sweeping through Caribbean and African countries as well as a few rock clubs in Minneapolis. (10 p.m. Sat., the Cedar.)
The Liberian-born rapper also deals in reggaeton but with more of a mainstream rap vibe and frequent homages to his African roots. (4 p.m. Sun., Currie Park.)
Two of the best-loved reggae groups in Minneapolis, each has an outspoken, visionary frontman and regularly perform at the local hub of African music, the Blue Nile restaurant. (6 & 7 p.m. Sun., Currie Park.)
