Tammy Blanchard and Morgan Spector star in “Burning Blue.”

‘PING PONG SUMMER’ and ‘BURNING BLUE’

We’ve got two openings this weekend without benefit of press screenings. “Ping Pong Summer” (unrated), a nostalgic coming-of-age comedy at Mall of America, revisits the rad ’80s for a tale of young love, hip-hop, neon-hued nylon and feathered haircuts. Marcello Conte plays a shy 13-year-old table-tennis fan whose vacation crush winkingly mirrors the story line of “The Karate Kid.” The supporting cast includes Susan Sarandon, Amy Sedaris, Judah Friedlander and Lea Thompson. Meanwhile, at Eden Prairie, there’s the gay romantic drama “Burning Blue” (R for language, some sexual content and graphic nudity). The story begins with a military aviation crash inquiry that becomes a witch hunt for closeted fighter pilots. Co-screenwriter/director D.M.W. Greer drew on his experiences as a Navy flier in the ’80s, prior to President Obama eliminating sexual-orientation discrimination in the military.
