‘Death To Prom’

Opening Friday: There’s an easygoing amiability to this locally filmed independent romcom, and a timely hook. This puppy-love story features he-and-she best friends swooning over the same guy. “Death to Prom” (unrated; ⋆⋆ out of four stars) doesn’t get a moral migraine over its premise. It just puts its likable high school characters through the paces of trying to sort it all out en route to the happy ending. Directors Jeremy Wilker and Matthew Stenerson create a convivial atmosphere despite the constraints of a visibly limited production budget. They have a real find in lead actor Ricardo Vázquez, who plays the gay sector of the love triangle with good-hearted ease. His co-stars could learn from his example. (Through Thursday at Mall of America.)
