Diablo Cody previews new movie in Edina

It was a hush-hush homecoming for Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody ("Juno") as she returned to the Twin Cities under a publicity blackout Wednesday night. Cody and "Juno" director Jason Reitman appeared at the Edina Cinema to host a preview of their new collaboration, "Young Adult."

The film, partly shot around the Twin Cities last October, has been the subject of much anticipation and speculation among film buffs. The film, which has been kept off the festival circuit entirely, is a dark dramatic comedy starring best actress Oscar winner Charlize Theron ("Monster," "North Country"). She plays a divorced children's author who leaves her Minneapolis home to pursue her old high school flame (Patrick Wilson) even though he is now a happily married family man. Patton Oswalt plays a former classmate of the pair.

Ticketholders for the screening were not told in advance what film they would be seeing or who the celebrity guests would be. When the hosts introduced themselves, applause swept through the theater.

"Young Adult" is set to hit theaters Dec. 9, a prime release date for awards season. Reitman's previous film, "Up in the Air," was a best-picture Oscar nominee.

Cody, who has set all three of her feature films here, said: "Clearly, I have some sort of Minnesotan complex. I've been alive for 33 years and only lived here for four. It's the most inspiring place I've ever lived. I can't stop writing Minnesota movies and this won't be the last."
