Green Line beer

St. Paul has added another notch to its brewery belt. Last week co-owners Jill Pavlak and Deb Loch opened Urban Growler next to Bang Brewing, not far from the Green Line’s Raymond Avenue station. Urban Growler’s taproom is Minnesota’s first with a kitchen, and it’s the state’s only brewery entirely owned and operated by women (Finnegan’s and Joseph Wolf Brewing Co. are women-owned, but they contract-brew). An engineer-turned-brewer, Loch cut her teeth as an assistant brewer at Wisconsin’s Minocqua Brewing Co. and apprenticing at Summit. Right now their cream ale, rye IPA and rhubarb wit are taproom-only, but look for draft accounts down the line.

Two levels in Lowertown

Another new St. Paul joint is now open in Lowertown. Public Kitchen + Bar is officially slinging modern American fare, vino, classic cocktails and more in its 10,000-square-foot space facing Mears Park. The two-level bar and restaurant is the brainchild of Carol March, who worked in the service industry prior to launching a real estate career. The space is split between an upstairs dining room and downstairs bar and lounge. The food menu is helmed by chef Greg Johnson, who most recently worked at the St. Paul Kincaid’s.

Remembering DJ Man-X

In late 2012, the Twin Cities house scene lost one of its early bastions. Thomas Spiegel, known to old-school house heads as DJ Man-X, launched his House Nation Under a Groove series in the late ’80s. On Saturday, friends and fellow DJs will pay tribute to his legacy with a night of beats and body moving in First Avenue’s 7th Street Entry. Ghetto, Focus, David Stromdahl, Bryan Gerrard, E-Tones, Naughty Wood and DVS1 are slated to perform, plus special guests. Proceeds benefit the American Society for Suicide Prevention.

Bombay competition

The eighth annual Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition hits the Twin Cities on Monday. Ten bartenders from some of our best cocktail joints will present their fanciful concoctions (using Bombay Sapphire gin, duh) to four judges at Le Meridien Chambers’ rooftop lounge, and the winner will advance to September’s national competition in Las Vegas. A suggested $10 donation benefits Open Arms of Minnesota. Last year, Saffron’s Robb Jones finished fourth in the nation.
