For years, about half of the "merlot" coming out of Chile was actually carmenere. The misidentification of many large vineyards has been corrected, and carmenere now is poised to become Chile's version of malbec. The Bisquertt "La Joya" Reserve Carmenere ($12) is a great introduction, with lush, dark fruit and chewy tannins. This lip-smacking, toasty red should especially please coffee lovers because of the notes on the finish. Try it with hearty fall stews or roasted winter squash. Available at Haskell's, Eden Prairie munis, Big Discount, MGM, Oaks Wine, Westside, Coborn's and others.
