Just as my hands (and stomach) are getting used to those big, hearty 22-ounce bottles of Fat Tire -- which debuted at bars in June -- Summit is releasing its oversized bottles. The St. Paul brewery's 22-ounce "bombers" are available at First Avenue and should hit more bars and stores soon. Currently, they're available only in Extra Pale Ale, but Summit plans to super-size their seasonal beers, as well. More info: www.summitbrewing.com.
Cool art openingsYo, art heads: There are two really great opening parties this weekend. Rosalux Gallery is featuring the paintings of Amy Crickenberger Oeth and Jennifer Davis, who makes those beautifully strange scenes of floating sea lions and other creatures. (7-10 p.m. Sat. Through Jan. 31. 1011 Washington Av. S., Mpls. 612-747-3942. www.rosaluxgallery.com) And Altered Esthetics in northeast Minneapolis is opening "Midwest Sanctuary," a group exhibit of artists from Brazil, Iraq, Mexico and other countries who are now based in the Midwest. (7-10 p.m. today. Through Jan. 26. 1224 NE. Quincy St., Mpls. 612-378-8888. www.alteredesthetics.org)
Ice bar cometh, againThe ice bar is back at the Chambers in downtown Minneapolis. The outdoor bar -- yes, actually made from ice -- was a hit last year among drinkers who liked a little chill with their martini. Strange isn't it, that we already live on the frozen tundra but still find it fun to stand outside and drink overpriced cocktails? Masochists we are. Hmph. Well, see you there. (Open at 5 p.m. Tue.-Sat. 901 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. 612-767-6900. www.chambersminneapolis.com)
Kings of reggaeMinneapolis is lucky to have a few good reggae nights in town. One is hosted by the III Kings, a trio of DJs who commanded a fun night at Rudolph's for quite some time. They now play every Wednesday at the Nomad on Cedar-Riverside. Once a month they also bring in a live roots band (the Elementals play Jan. 16). Check it out. (8 p.m. Wed. 501 Cedar Av. S., Mpls. $2. 21 and older. 612-338-6424. www.nomadpub.com)
