Five is an arresting eating spot

Last update: December 28, 2005 - 5:06 PM

Stewart and Heidi Woodman spent 18 months getting Five Restaurant & Street Lounge off the ground, and for diners it was worth the effort. With Stewart manning the kitchen and Heidi overseeing the front of the house, the couple have plugged an electric "bright lights big city" energy into south Minneapolis, a sensibility culled from their years of working in some of New York City's top restaurants and Stewart's tirelessly inventive, boundary-stretching cooking.

Designed to capture several dining-out demographic segments, the Woodmans' extravagant, one-of-a-kind enterprise works for singles slipping in for a cocktail and a snack in the first-floor lounge, the foursome in search of an impromptu week- night dinner in the bustling bistro, or the family celebrating with an 11-course culinary blowout in the subdued, serious dining room.

Oh, and those tantalizing bite-size doughnuts that come with the check? They're a sly nod to the surroundings, a former police precinct headquarters.
