Bad news for fans of Filipino food: Subo in downtown Minneapolis has closed. Good news for fans of food in general: The acclaimed team behind the Strip Club Meat & Fish is taking over the space. Tim Niver and Aaron Johnson, who also brought the Town Talk Diner to life a few years ago, are the new operators. Subo's owner, businessman Jim Hays, will stay on. Subo opened late last year to a good buzz in the foodie scene but never seemed to catch on.

The new name will be The Inn, Niver said, indicating that the restaurant/bar will be all about comfort. He and Johnson are in the midst of hiring a new executive chef and hope to reopen the space by mid-November. Niver said the menu will be comfort food with a Euro-colonial twist. They will continue to operate the Strip Club as well. While you'll find classic cocktails on the menu (a Niver/Johnson staple), beverages will play up the comfort factor. Niver envisions pitchers of craft beer and big-handled mugs. "It's not groundbreaking," he said. "It's not meant to be." Niver said he hopes to rehire some of Subo's staff. "I completely respect the work that's gone on there," he said.

The duo (with chef JD Fratzke) opened the Strip Club in St. Paul's Dayton's Bluff area in 2008 and sold their part in the Town Talk Diner shortly after. Both restaurants are located in neighborhoods that would have scared away most other restaurateurs. "This is going to be the best location I've ever had," Niver said.

The new Tom Green show Most people will remember Tom Green (if you remember him at all) from his late '90s MTV hit "The Tom Green Show" and for surviving testicular cancer. In the years since, his obnoxiously charming personality has been relegated to bad movies and the Internet ("Tom Green's House Tonight"). Recently, he began a new endeavor: stand-up. He plays the Mall of America's House of Comedy this weekend.

8 and 10:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. Mall of America, fourth level. $38.95. 952-854-6228. www.houseofcomedy.net.

Mary Mack for charity Looking for comedy in the eastern suburbs? The Water Street Inn in Stillwater is starting a monthly comedy night this weekend in association with Jim Taugher's Laugh Lines. Folk humorist Mary Mack is leading off the inaugural show. I still get a kick out of her "rap" video, "Street Heat" (watch at: www.marymackcomedy.com). Taugher said this will be comedy for a cause, with part of the proceeds from each weekend going to a different charity (this one is for Valley Outreach).

8 and 10:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. 101 S. Water St., Stillwater. $15. 651-439-6000. www.waterstreetinn.us.
