Minneapolis writer Miriam Karmel is the winner of the inaugural First Fiction award sponsored by Holy Cow! Press of Duluth and the Lindquist & Vennum Foundation of the Twin Cities.

Karmel is the author of the novel, "Being Esther," published in 2013 by Milkweed Editions. She's also a past winner of Minnesota Monthly's Tamarack Award for her story, "The Queen of Love." Her winning manuscript, "Subtle Variations and Other Stories," was selected from 65 entries. It will be published in October by Holy Cow.

The First Fiction award carries a $5,000 prize and a publishing contract with Holy Cow. The Lindquist & Vennum Foundation is also the sponsor of Milkweed Edition's annual poetry prize.
