Hot on the trail of John Sandford

If you missed the first few Twin Cities-based events for the launch of John Sandford's new book, "Phantom Prey" (Putnam, 373 pages, $26.95), never fear. After stops in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia, Colorado, California, Arizona and Texas, he'll be back in his home state for these events:

May 27, 7 p.m., Barnes & Noble, Har Mar, 2100 N. Snelling Av., Roseville.

May 28, 7 p.m., Bookcase of Wayzata, 607 E. Lake St., Wayzata.

May 29, 6:30 p.m., Lake Country Booksellers, White Bear Lake Ramsey County Library, 4698 Clark Av., White Bear Lake.

In "Phantom Prey," the 18th of Sandford's Prey series, BCA ace Lucas Davenport has his hands full: He's investigating mysterious deaths in the Twin Cities' Goth subculture while also serving on the security committee for the upcoming Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Sandford, a former Pioneer Press reporter, recently returned from Iraq, where he wrote for minnpost.com.

Watch for these upcoming titles from relative newcomers to the genre, who also have backgrounds in journalism:

"Stalking Susan," by Julie Kramer (Doubleday, 240 pages, $22.95, July). Kramer, of White Bear Lake, is a freelance producer for NBC's "Today," "Nightly News" and "Dateline." She builds her tale around a serial killer who targets women named Susan.

"Green Monster," by Rick Shefchik (Poisoned Pen, 306 pages, $24.95, September). The former Pioneer Press reporter's plot revolves around the Boston Red Sox and a $20 million extortion note.
