It may have been the last night of the summer U.S. tour for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers but they didn't do anything special or even out of the ordinary on Saturday at Target Center. It was pretty much the same set as they've been doing all summer long.

The Smithereens, who opened the concert, sounded great on their loud New Jersey power pop (not all opening acts plug into a big arena sound system as effectively), but they sure looked beefy.

Props to Petty and the Heartbreakers, including steady bassist Ron Blair and multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston, who did not get mentioned in my review. Of course, I can't gush enough about guitarist Mike Campbell, who puts the heart and break in the Heartbreakers. As Petty himself said of Campbell on Saturday: "He's co-captain. Without him, we don't exist."
