Osmo Vanska is still scheduled to lead his band in concert on Feb. 1 in Minneapolis, but the music director of the Minnesota Orchestra will make a quick trip to Taiwan this weekend. Vanska will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Friday and Saturday, subbing for maestro Riccardo Muti. The CSO kicks off its Asian tour with the two concerts in Taipei. After Vanska's two dates, Lorin Maazel will take over for the rest of the tour, which concludes Feb. 7 in Seoul, South Korea. Muti, 71, was to undergo hernia surgery in Italy on Monday and will miss the entire trip. Vanska will conduct the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto (with soloist Maxim Vengerov) and Beethoven's Eroica Symphony (No. 3) on Friday. On Saturday, he will conduct Brahms Symphony No. 2. Last fall, Vanska conducted the CSO in an all-Brahms program. The concert on Feb. 1 at the Minneapolis Convention Center will be Vanska's first appearance locally since last summer – before musicians were locked out in a union contract dispute. The concert is an initiative by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and arts benefactor Judy Dayton to celebrate the Minnesota Orchestra's nomination for a Grammy award. Vanska has been busy during his absence from Minnesota. He conducted the BBC Symphony at the Proms in London. He was with the London Philharmonic and the London Symphony in November and December. He traveled to Copenhagen, Finland, Kansas City and Shanghai among other appearances.
