The Ramaswamy name crops up three times in the six McKnight Artist Fellowships for Dancer and Choreographers for 2012. The mid-career fellowships, which come with $25,000, are administered by Northrop Concerts and Lectures at the University of Minnesota.
The fellowships for choreographers go to Ananya Chatterjea, Carl Flink, and Aparna Ramaswamy & Ranee Ramaswamy.
The fellowships for dancers go to Taryn Griggs, Ashwini Ramaswamy and Stephen Schroeder.
Ranee Ramaswamy and her daughters Aparna and Ashwini are the core of Ragamala, a troupe established in the Twin Cities in 1992 that has won recognition locally and nationally. The dance company was named Artist of the Year by the Star Tribune in 2011. It will perform July 10-12 at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina.
