The tornado that struck north Minneapolis on May 22, 2011, left a path of devastation that is still evident today. Uprooted tree stumps and roots remain visible. Collapsed buildings have not been rebuilt. And lives have been turned inside out.

Minneapolis-based movement troupe Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater has teamed up with two Hennepin County libraries to gather stories of those who were affected by this disaster.

On Saturday, May 19, written and aural stories will be collected from 12:30-2 p.m. at Hennepin County Library – Sumner, 611 Van White Blvd., Minneapolis; and from 3-4:30 p.m. at Hennepin County Library – North Regional, 1315 Lowry Ave. N., Minneapolis.

The stories are likely to be published in a book and may possibly be used as inspiration for dances. Those wishing to share North Minneapolis tornado stories may register online at www.hclib.org. Click on Events & Classes, then do a keyword search on the word Temporary. Or they may call the Sumner Library at 612-543-6875 or North Regional Library at 612-543-8450. Walk-in participants also are welcomed. The tornado struck on a Sunday, cutting power and phone connections and destroying homes. While neighborhood libraries in Minneapolis are usually closed on Mondays, three of them (Northeast, Pierre Bottineau, and Sumner) opened to serve hundreds of people affected by the wreckage.
