Happy Birthday, Mr. Bach

J.S. Bach would be 327 years old on March 21 — had he not died at the young age of 65 in 1750. Bach fans are marking the composer’s birthday early, on March 17 (while he’s still only 326) with a day-long series of one-hour concerts. Mix it in and around your St. Patrick’s Day festivities.


Johnny, as his friends called him, was quite accomplished at the keyboard and served in several locations as church organist and music director. The performances in Minneapolis involve organ, piano, singers and other instrumentalists. The schedule for the 17th:

9-10 a.m. and 10:30-11:30 a.m., Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland Av., Mpls.

1-2 p.m., Lake of the Isles Lutheran, 2020 W. Lake of the Isles Blvd., Mpls.

2:30-3:30 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal, 1917 Logan Av. S., Mpls.

4-5 p.m., Plymouth Congregational, 1900 Nicollet Av. S., Mpls.

All performances are free and the program changes between venues. The first hour at Hennepin Avenue will be broadcast live on KSJN, 99.5 FM.
