That Carol Connolly. Doesn't want us to be lulled into any kind of sense of complacency. Just when we have gotten accustomed--after 13 years--to her Second Tuesday Reading by Writers series being on the Second Tuesday of every month, she pulls the rug out from under us.

This month--and this month only--the Third Tuesday reading series will be on the Third Wednesday.

If you've never been to one of her Reading by Writers evenings, you're in for a spectacular time. It takes place at the University Club in St. Paul, in a room with great windows that look out over the Mississippi River. There's a cash bar in a nearby room, and if you come early enough you can also get dinner. (Reservations at 651-222-1751.) This month's reading will feature three poets with new books, and five of the members of Penchant, a group of women poets from Northfield who have been meeting for 40 years. The eight readers are:

Marge Barrett, who teaches at the Loft, will read from her new chapbook, "My Memoir Dress."

Mary Ann Corbett, winner of many literary awards, will read from "Breath Control," and "Credo for the Checkout Line in Winter."

Nancy Raeburn, author of the memoir, "Mykonos," will read through "Passing through Heart Land."

Jane McDonnell, who won a Minnesota Book Award for "News from the Border."

Karen Sandberg, a widely published poet.

Susan Thurston Hamerski, whose work is included in the anthology "Low Down and Coming On."

Karen Herseth Wee, author of three books, including a Minnesota Book Award finalist.

Mary Moore Easter, author of "Walking From Origins."

Everything begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at the University Club, 420 Summit Ave., St. Paul. Hosted by St. Paul Poet Laureate and Kay Sexton Award winner Carol Connolly. She always tries to wrap everything up in about an hour. But eight poets might require a bit more time. Check it out.
