Six years after she took fifth place on the CBS show "INXS: Rock Star," Jordis Unga is back on national TV and poised to do even better this time. The Twin Cities-reared rocker, who got her start locally in the Fighting Tongs (aka Liars Club), earned a rave reception on NBC's "The Voice" last night. Singing McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," she earned some truly amazed-sounding raves from three of the judges, er, coaches – who, in this case, hit to a button to turn their chairs around as a sign of their thumbs-up.

Blake Shelton was the first to turn around, almost immediately. Cee-Lo and Christina Aguilera both joined him when Unga kicked into high gear mid-way through the song. As the performance ended, Unga's hands visibly shook and she burst into tears. Her Tongan dad danced excitedly backstage alongside her Swedish mom, residents of Forest Lake. Given the chance to pick which of the coaches' teams she wants to join, Unga stuck to a snooze-you-lose philosophy and went with Shelton.

"You're the type of person that I have been sitting here waiting for you," Shelton told her. "You're the type of singer that makes me excited about what I do. Your voice makes me want to push myself to be that much better of a singer."

Adam Levine might've had the best line: "I'm the a—hole who didn't pick you," he said.

Since her "Rock Star" run, Unga, 29, has been in something of career limbo. The show earned her a contract with Epic Records in 2006, and she worked on demos with some reportedly big-name collaborators in Los Angeles. That also led to her singing for a while with the all-star band Camp Freddy. However, Epic started downsizing soon thereafter and nothing came of the demoing.

A powerful rock howler with hints of Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge in her voice, Unga had some memorable performances on "Rock Star." Most notably, she wowed us with David Bowie's "Man Who Sold the World," which she dedicated to then-recently deceased friend Bryan Ottoson, guitarist in American Head Charge. When she was booted off the show, INXS guitarist Tim Farriss told her, "You are going to be a huge star, and I will be the first guy to buy your record." Looks like Farriss could finally get the chance to live up to those words.
