Word is trickling out that Andy Rooney's "60 Minutes" commentary this Sunday will be his last regular appearance on the CBS newsmagazine show. It's no secret to regular viewers that Rooney isn't mellowing with age, a point that often makes him the target of lampooning.

For the record, Rooney is 92. But if you need that put in perspective, consider this: His first CBS job, in 1949, was as a writer on "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts." You will recognize it today as not much different from "American Idol." Along with the video above, here's more on Godfrey, a figure almost forgotten today. But some of the stars he helped launch aren't: Pat Boone, Tony Bennett, Eddie Fisher, Connie Francis and Patsy Cline.
