"The Scottsboro Boys," which had its shakedown cruise at the Guthrie last August, surprised the theater world with 12 Tony nominations. The musical, the last collaboration between John Kander and Fred Ebb, was nominated for Best Musical, best book and score. Actor Joshua Henry was nominated as a lead, and Colman Domingo and Forrest McClendon were nominated for featured roles. All those actors were in the Guthrie production.

Susan Stroman was also nominated as director and choreographer. "The Scottsboro Boys" did huge business in Minneapolis, and in a previous off-Broadway run in early 2010. The success did not transfer to Broadway, though. The show closed after six weeks.

Other Tony news with sort-of local connections. Mark Rylance, who did a memorable "Peer Gynt" at the Guthrie in 2008, was nominated as best actor in "Jerusalem." And Joanna Lumley was nominated for "La Bete," which had local actor Sally Wingert in the cast.

The awards will be made June 12.
