Garrison Keillor is actually following through on his 2010 promise to find a new host for “A Prairie Home Companion.” Well, at least, he’s giving someone a one-show tryout.
Singer-fiddler Sara Watkins, who did a 25-city tour with Keillor last summer, will be the first guest host ever, on Jan. 15 at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Keillor started the weekly radio program in 1974.
“I’ve never gotten to see the show myself,” Keillor said in a statement. “I've always been standing in the wings and thinking about what I'm supposed to do next. For once in my life, I want to stand in the back of the hall and watch for a few minutes. And Sara is a smart and funny and hugely gifted young woman. And the Shoe Band and the Royal Academy of Radio Acting will be there, so she’ll have all the support she needs. It’ll be fun. And at long last, one person in the world will understand what I go through week after week. Just kidding.”
Actually, Keillor will be a guest on his own show, delivering the News from Lake Wobegon and perhaps participating in other ways.
Watkins, 29, who grew up in Vista, Calif., is best known for her work with Nickel Creek, the acclaimed Grammy-winning progressive bluegrass group that is on hiatus. In 2009, she released her self-titled solo debut, produced by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame. She is scheduled to play fiddle with the Decemberists on their 2011 tour.
Joining Watkins on the Jan. 15 PHC show will be banjo ace Abigail Washburn and singer-songwriter Tom Brousseau.
In other Praire Home news, Keillor is asking people to submit jokes for PHC’s Joke Show on Jan. 22. For information and submissions, go to www.prairiehome.org/jokes.
