Opening tonight: In his ornate colored pencil drawings, Minneapolis artist Frank Big Bear has always mined his personal history and the Chippewa legends and tales he encountered growing up on Minnesota's White Earth Reservation. For his new show, he's focused on female archetypes and themes loosely associated with the witch tree, a Lake Superior landmark. The colorful drawings are more personal and introspective than usual, said gallery owner Todd Bockley, and involve responses to such archetypal roles as mother, daughter, grandmother, the eternal feminine and artistic muses. He dubbed this wildly expressive figure "The Queen of Mean." (Opening reception, 6-9 p.m. today, free. Bockley Gallery, 2123 W. 21st St., Mpls. Ends Nov. 14, free. 612-377-4669 or www.bockleygallery.com)
