Spotlight: Northern Clay Center

ARCHITECTURE AND CERAMICS

Ongoing: From adobe bricks to terra cotta roof tiles and ornamental cornices, clay has been fundamental to architecture for centuries. A clever new show at the Northern Clay Center focuses on architectural motifs in the work of five ceramicists and an architect working in clay. Their work ranges from Dan Anderson's teapots and containers in the shape of industrial buildings to William Daley's Art Deco bowls. Pennsylvania artist Robert Winokur has gained international attention for sleek sculptures of minimalist buildings, especially houses and barns, while New Mexico artist Nora Naranjo- Morse creates expressive clay totems. Lidya Buzio of New York paints fanciful cityscapes onto complex clay sculpture, including the "vase" shown here.
