Wait! Before you head for the water, make sure you and everyone with you knows how to swim. There are several private swimming schools in the Twin Cities, but they can be pricey. Here are some less expensive options.
Twin Cities YMCA Greater St. Paul and Metro Minneapolis offer swimming lessons for all ages (6 months old to adult) through Aug. 9. Eight lessons cost $98 for nonmembers, $29 for members.
Minneapolis Parks and Recreation beach and pool swimming lessons cost $45 for residents of Minneapolis, $55 for nonresidents.
St. Paul Parks and Recreation also offers lessons, $55 if you register online, $60 for mail-in or in-person registration.
Even if you know how to swim, remember water-safety laws and note that any child 10 or younger must wear a life jacket aboard any open vessel that is not moored or docked.
