One could make a good argument that reality TV can be traced back to the 1990 murder trial of teacher Pamela Smart, a case that inspired numerous shows, books, plays and films. “Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart” features a new interview with her, as well as commentary from officials and journalists who had a front-row seat to the tragic circus. 8 p.m. HBO

Gentlemen, start your engines. “Fast N’ Loud” revs up for a new season with motor mastermind Richard Rawlings and his sidekick Aaron Kaufman building a chopped Model A, landing a huge music car for a restaurant drive-in and preparing for a treacherous road race. 8 p.m. Discovery
