Lewis conducts Mahler, Puts

Thursday, Saturday: Associate conductor Courtney Lewis will lead the Minnesota Orchestra in Mahler’s Fifth and Kevin Puts’ Symphony No. 4 in two concerts this week. The orchestra will offer a free reprise of the Puts symphony at 10 p.m. Sat. as part of Northern Spark. Lewis, whose tenure in Minnesota is coming to an end next month, was named in February as assistant conductor with the New York Philharmonic, and last month was appointed music director at the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida. The 30-year-old native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, started at Minnesota in 2010. He has appeared annually on the subscription calendar and leads young people’s concerts. He continues to direct Boston’s Discovery Ensemble, which he founded. (11 a.m. Thu., 7 p.m. Sat. $22-$84. Orchestra Hall, 11th St. and Nicollet Mall, Mpls. 612-371-5656, www.minnesotaorchestra.org.)
