Nightlife: Hotly anticipated patios

We don’t want to jinx anything, but after a grueling winter, patio season is totally kind of pretty much here. Being outside no longer requires a balaclava and soon the outdoor areas at Twin Cities bars and restaurants will be teeming with hordes of thirsty sun-cravers.

From lakeside rooftops to taprooms with potential, here are six of the summer’s most anticipated new patios.

Coup d’état — now open

The Sunday funday crowd seems to have found its summer home with Boneyard’s brunch rager (as Vegas-day-party as biscuits and gravy get). But if eggs and EDM aren’t your speed, try Coup d’état’s balcony for brunch, dinner or late night. With its wraparound mezzanine plus a swath of sidewalk, the Borough boys’ Uptown incarnation doubles up on patio space in the middle of the bustling nightlife district. The second-level perch, with its prime view of the barhopping milieu, should be in-demand real estate on weekend nights. It doesn’t hurt that they make the best whiskey sour in town.

Hola Arepa — now open

Patios don’t always need a dazzling view or a see-and-be-seen swagger to be one of the hottest. Sometimes a comfy deck and stellar food, drink and service are enough (go figure). This food truck’s brick-and-mortar spot is poised to take Kingfield by storm this summer with delectable Latin street food and care-shedding cocktails that beg to be sipped under the sun. The handful of outdoor bar stools underneath the bar’s pop-up window (sort of a tribute to its mobile roots) should be some of this summer’s most sought-after seats.

Bauhaus Brew Labs — July

Taproom tours have become a favorite beer-geek pastime in northeast Minneapolis. Once Bauhaus opens a stone’s throw from 612Brew, wayfaring ale buffs will be able to map a decent brewery crawl without ever drinking inside. At press time, this family-run brewery-to-be was approaching $32,000 in Kickstarter cash it plans to use to trick out its taproom and a 2,000-square-foot patio. If the Bauhaus crew spends your money wisely, you could be drinking one of their Americanized German beers on a cool new patio in the middle of an industrial park.

6 Smith — late June

Parasole vet Randy Stanley and chef J.P. Samuelson are looking to make a splash on Lake Minnetonka’s boat-slip dining scene. They aim to bring a little city style to the western suburbs with their meat and seafood restaurant taking over the NorthCoast space. 6 Smith will feature dual patios — a ground-level 70-seater, plus a rooftop burger and lobster shack with 143 seats and a separate menu. Bradstreet Craftshouse and Icehouse alum Jon Olson has created a cocktail list broken out by spirit, and old- and new-school drinks. We’d totally yacht there.

LynLake Brewery — August

We won’t call Lyn-Lake the new Nordeast just yet, but the south Minneapolis neighborhood will soon have its third brewhouse. This taproom-only brewery is moving into the long-vacant Theatre Antiques space on the same block as the Herkimer brewpub and the sake-making Moto-i. We’re told plans call for a rooftop bar with a “back-yard feel” and a big ol’ steel fireball sculpture, while head brewer Joel Carlson (ex-Town Hall and Great Waters) oversees LynLake Brewery’s small-batch beers. The Twin Cities’ first taproom with a rooftop will have a handful of mainstay brews, plus rotating firkins and barrel-aged beers.

Betty Danger’s Country Club — late summer/early fall
