Pleading poverty, orchestra cancels bandshell concert

Last update: July 23, 2008 - 12:19 AM

The Minnesota Orchestra, citing a lack of money, on Tuesday canceled its Lake Harriet bandshell concert, the finale for the venue's music season. It had been scheduled for Sept. 14.

"In the current difficult economic climate, we are very sorry to report that we will not be able to perform the orchestra's upcoming September performance" at the bandshell, said Minnesota Orchestra President and CEO Michael Henson.

"We hope to be able to return to this beautiful setting in future seasons."

The orchestra has performed annually at Lake Harriet since 2003.

The Lake Harriet concert season now will close with the seventh-annual "9/11 Tribute: Our Community Remembers" at 7 p.m. Sept. 11. Information about that concert will be available soon at www.our911tribute.com or www.minneapolisparks.org.
