Q & A with SATC costume designer Patricia Field

Last update: June 4, 2008 - 3:43 PM

Meet Patricia Field, the woman behind the more than 300 outfits from "Sex and the City: The Movie."

Q I want to see the movie again to just study the clothes.

A I think they should have a course at FIT called "Sex and the City."

Q Favorite fashion moment in the movie?

A I do love the opening dress. I like it because it's kind of an allusion to the screen credits. Me putting my name out there and [Sarah Jessica Parker] together. It's saying to the audience, hi, the doors are open, here I am. It's the big flower on a vintage dress. It was actually a long, to-the-floor dress and I chopped it.

Q Of all the characters, Miranda definitely made the biggest fashion leap.

A She was striking. I believe she rose above it all. The changes came organically through the actress, Cynthia Nixon. I just got on the surfboard and rode it.

Q Anna Wintour picked the wedding dresses?

A That was a Vogue shoot -- art-directed and styled by Vogue. The only one that Anna [Wintour] didn't pick was the dress by Vivienne Westwood. That one was chosen by Sarah Jessica Parker and myself.

Q Why that particular dress?

A It is a complete Cinderella dress. It was fitting for the classic sense of it -- full and like a cream puff. Then her girls were behind her in those slim Zac Posen dresses.

Q What about the suit Carrie was actually married in?

A That suit was Dior. We weren't selling a label, though. It looked like a beautiful white classic suit. It didn't reek of fashion. It didn't have the skirt originally, so we had the skirt made. I could have gone and searched high and low for other white vintage, but I had that suit in my hands and [Parker] loved it.

Q Who was best dressed at the premiere?

A Oh, well, I think on a personal-style level that Cynthia Nixon stood out. She was the classiest of the four -- she always had it in her.

Q What about your collection of shoes for Payless?

A I'm going to do another line in the fall of boots. I'm very happy with the accessibility. They're made really well. All you have to do is add good design and that's the key.

Q What was the inspiration for the current collection [now at the Mall of America]?

A It was simply that it's summer; it's a happy time; the sun is shining. I need four classic shoes with a new twist -- a pump, a classic flat, a sandal and a mule. I how love the metallics reflect the light. I also love them because of their neutralness -- they go with everything.

Q Would the "Sex and the City" characters wear the shoes instead of their Manolos?

A They will in the future. At the time that we shot it, these shoes weren't available.

Q Who would wear each one?

A I don't know! The great thing about these shoes is that one person can wear all four. They're classic styles. All of the girls wear the pump.
