A magical 'Kingdom'

Wes Anderson takes us to another slightly humorous, slightly melancholy, slightly off-kilter world in "Moonrise Kingdom."

It's the story of two gifted and sensitive 12-year-olds who run away from the sad world of adults and set up camp on a remote inlet on a New England island called New Penzance. The two romantics, Suzy (Kara Hayward) and Sam (Jared Gilman) are on the fringes of adolescence. Why they would want to grow up is anybody's guess.

Suzy's parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) think of her as troubled. Sam lives in a foster home with a couple who are planning to return him because they believe he's emotionally disturbed.

Anderson shows us enough of the adults' disturbing emotions so that you feel relief when the young couple flee. The film is a droll tale of a strange realm where despite sadness and fears, magic is always a possibility.

Extras on the DVD and Blu-ray (Universal, $30-$35) include making-of featurettes.

LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS

Colin Covert's take: "Moonrise Kingdom" is the latest unadulterated delight from Wes Anderson, director of "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox." His stylized films might be an acquired taste, but too bad for those who don't appreciate them.

Also out Tuesday:

Movies: "Chernobyl Diaries," "Excision," "Half the Sky," "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," "2016: Obama's America," "That's My Boy."

TV: "Alcatraz," "Check It Out" (Seasons 1 & 2), "The Firm" (Season 1), "Mad Men" (Season 5), "A Princess for Christmas," "Psych" (Season 6), "Touch" (Season 1).

Blu-ray debuts: "Ella Enchanted," "The Funhouse," "A League of Their Own," "Looney Tunes Platinum Collection, Vol. 2," "Pete's Dragon," "The Santa Clause 3-Movie Collection," "Terror Train."
