Casey Mittelstadt notched three assists and a goal in his first taste of college hockey as the Gophers opened the 2017-18 season with a 6-2 exhibition victory over Alberta on Sunday at Mariucci Arena.

Brent Gates Jr. scored two goals and Mike Szmatula and Rem Pitlick contributed two assists each.

Mittelstadt scored the first goal of the Gophers preseason on a backhander at 5:53 of the first period before Alberta evened the score later in the period.

The teams traded single goals in the second period before the Gophers struck for four in the third, including two on the power play.

The Gophers outshot Alberta 12-4 in the third period and 26-23 for the night.

U wins at Maryland

Goals by Molly Fiedler and Megan Koenig in the game’s first 11 minutes carried the Gophers to a 3-1 soccer victory over Maryland in College Park, Md. April Bockin added an insurance goal in the 67th minute. The Gophers (7-2-3, 3-1-1 Big Ten) came away with two wins and six points on the weekend road trip.

• Grace Kellar and Joanne Free were tied for 14th at 2-over-par 74 after one round, and the Gophers women’s golf team was in 11th place at 19 over par in the 12-team ANNIKA Intercollegiate at Olympic Hills. Arkansas leads the three-day event at even-par 288, three ahead of South Carolina.
