2005 Ford Freestyle: Distinctive crossover offered versatility

Last update: October 15, 2009 - 3:00 PM

It is the automotive question of the new millennium. If a sedan is not versatile enough, an SUV is too big and a minivan just does not fit the lifestyle equation, what other option is there? The answer: crossovers.

A crossover takes attributes of two or more types of vehicles to create, in essence, a new type of automobile. Take the 2005 Ford Freestyle, for example, which combined the handling and fuel economy of a sedan with the versatility of minivan and SUV.

Based on the Volvo XC90 and sharing the same platform as the Ford Five Hundred sedan, the Freestyle offered seven-passenger seating with lots of cargo options. It was also available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

Powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 engine, and mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Freestyle was rated as a low emissions vehicle that uses regular unleaded gasoline. It had a 19-gallon fuel tank and had the ability to tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Available in SE, SEL and Limited trim lines, the Freestyle not only had the capability of carrying up to seven passengers in three rows of theater-style seating, the rear rows of seating could be folded flat to provide more than 85 cubic feet of cargo area. It was also loaded with cupholders and storage compartments throughout the vehicle.

So, indeed, the Freestyle may offer just the kind of versatility you are looking for. Something to consider when shopping for a used vehicle.

And, speaking of used car shopping, most new vehicle dealers will check to see if a vehicle received in trade has any outstanding recall notices. However, whether purchasing from a dealership or private party, always have a mechanic inspect the vehicle prior to signing an agreement.

EPA fuel economy:

City: 19, Highway: 24

Kelley Blue Book:

$15,950 to $17,300
