The evolution of the popular Tacoma pickup continues to add to Toyota's rich truck heritage that began over 40 years ago. The Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is an extended cab with dual access doors and tumble flat rear seats.

Power for Tacoma is generated by either a large 2.7L four-cylinder engine or a strong 4.0L V-6 power plant. Both engines feature variable valve timing and electronic throttle control. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic for the four-cylinder engine; a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic for the V-6.

Available in Base, X-Runner and Pre-Runner models, the Tacoma features two- and four-wheel drive configurations, while PreRunner models combine the two-wheel drive train with the raised riding stance and styling of the four-wheel drive models.

Additionally, the PreRunner combines up to 12 inches of ground clearance, beefed-up suspension, larger brakes and the rugged styling of the 4x4 in a more affordable, more fuel-efficient two-wheel- drive platform.

Leading the Tacoma line in performance and style is the X-Runner model that blends concept-truck design with sports car performance and a specially tuned chassis. The X-Runner incorporates full-vehicle-surround ground effects, a hood scoop and integrated fog lamps.

On the road, the Tacoma Access Cab equipped with the larger V-6 and five-speed automatic transmission is smooth, solid and car-like. At times, it is hard to remember that it is a pickup truck. But this is indeed a vehicle designed and engineered for work.

Inside the cabin, sound absorption material in the headliner, behind the rear seats and better-insulating carpeting help provide a quiet cabin while exterior aerodynamic details help reduce wind noise. A three- pod instrument gauge panel lends a sporty look to all models.

Safety features abound: dual front airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, tire pressure monitoring system, side-impact door beams and full-size spare tire. X-Runner adds remote keyless entry, limited slip rear differential, engine immobilizer and fog lights.
