In the market for a perfect pre-owned sport utility vehicle but not sure where to turn; don't feel alone. With an assortment of makes and models to choose from, many consumers are overwhelmed when it is time to buy.
Buyers looking for a luxury-oriented compact sport utility may want to consider the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. Built on the same platform as the popular-selling Ford Explorer, the upscale Mountaineer was first introduced in mid-1996 as Mercury's first-ever SUV vehicle.
Initially available in one trim level, the well-equipped Mercury four-door SUV was powered by a push-rod 5.0L V-8 bolted to a four-speed automatic transmission -- the only drive-line available for that model year. Two-wheel rear and all-wheel drive configurations allow consumers to choose according to need and local road and weather conditions.
Four-wheel drive models include Ford's Control Trac system, which includes a computer-operated transfer case to provide better on-road traction and more off-road flexibility.
In normal driving conditions, the system is in Auto mode to provide an interactive all-wheel drive system that continually monitors and adjusts torque to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip on slippery roads.
On 4X4 High mode, the transfer case clutch is electronically locked in high gear, providing a constant 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels. The 5.0L V-8 engine generates 215 horsepower. EPA fuel economy for the Mountaineer is 14 city/18 highway. Properly equipped, the Mercury truck can carry a maximum payload of 900 pounds.
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags and four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock.
As expected with any luxury-oriented model, the Mountaineer includes a bounty of standard features, including power windows, door locks, mirrors, and automatic climate control system, just to name a few.
