Shift: Up(scale): 2005 Nissan Maxima

Last update: July 19, 2005 - 11:00 PM

The all-new sixth-generation Nissan Maxima was introduced to American motorists last year. Moving to the automaker's modern FF-L (front engine, front-drive, large) platform, the Maxima boasts a 40 percent improvement in torsional rigidity over the previous model.

Offered in SE and SL trim levels, the front-drive Maxima sedan is now manufactured in Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee, assembly complex. The company's flagship comes with the award-winning VQ 3.5L V-6 engine and either a six-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode and gated shifter. Maxima's chiseled, muscular shape and distinctive C-pillar design give it a sport coupe-like silhouette.

On the road, the Maxima is smooth, fast and silent. The four-wheel independent suspension system features struts, coil springs, shocks and a stabilizer bar in front and an all-new multi-link suspension in the rear for superior handling and ride quality.

Inside the upscale cabin, seating is comfortable, outward visibility is great and the layout of displays and controls is first-rate. Rear windows go all the way down for maximum benefit, while a 60/40 split rear seat adds functionality to the ample, well-shaped cargo area. The Maxima's CD/cassette audio system is one of the last of its kind; XM or Sirius Satellite radio is available at extra cost.

A segment-first standard Skyview Roof creates an open environment for front and rear passengers while maintaining a solid roof structure. Sliding sunshades block out the sunlight when desired. A traditional power glass sunroof is available as an option.

Q: Car died but started right back up? - July 19, 2005
Q: Car died but started right back up? - Q: I own a 2003 BMW 3 Series with 90,000-plus miles. No real issues with the car ever, until this June. When I was pulling out of my complex, the car died, but started right up. Then, two days later it happened again. Then...it happened three weeks later. I took it to the shop and they kept the car for days and then responded that the ethanol levels in the gas tank were too high. So, I let the tank run empty and placed high-octane gas in the car - which was two weeks ago. But then today the car died again, minutes after starting...Any ideas?? - Stacy S., Minneapolis More
