The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., welcomes six more players on Sunday, two starting pitchers, two closers and two designated hitters.
Harold Baines: A six-time All-Star who played from 1980 to 2001 with five teams, primarily with the White Sox, who drafted him first overall in 1977. A two-time winner of the DH of the Year award. Picked by a veterans committee after never drawing more than 6.1% of the vote in five Hall of Fame elections by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Roy Halladay: Pitched 16 seasons, going 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA and 2,117 strikeouts and winning a Cy Young Award with his two teams, Toronto (2003) and Philadelphia (2010). Also finished in the top five of Cy Young voting five other seasons. Died Nov. 7, 2017, in a plane crash at age 40. Elected by the BBWAA with 85.4% of the vote.
Edgar Martinez: Playing for Seattle from 1987 to 2004, the seven-time All-Star is a career .312 hitter who won two AL batting titles, hitting .343 in 1992 and .356 in 1995, and was named the AL's outstanding DH five times. The Designated Hitter Award became the Edgar Martinez Award in 2004. Elected on his final BBWAA ballot with 85.4% of the vote.
Mike Mussina: Pitched 10 seasons for Baltimore and eight for the Yankees, going 270-153 with a 3.68 ERA. A seven-time Gold Glove winner and five-time All-Star, he was the first AL pitcher to win 10 or more games 17 consecutive seasons, becoming a 20-game winner in his final year of 2008. Elected by the BBWAA on his sixth ballot with 76.7% of the vote.
Mariano Rivera: The first unanimous selection by the BBWAA, MLB's all-time saves leader with 652 pitched from 1995 to 2013 with the Yankees, compiling a 2.21 ERA in 1,115 games, the most in AL history. The only reliever to win both an LCS MVP award (2003) and World Series MVP award (1999), he recorded an ERA under 2.00 in 11 seasons.
Lee Smith: A seven-time All-Star who pitched in 1,022 games over 18 seasons from 1980 to '97, finishing with 478 saves, ranking third all-time, and a 3.03 ERA. Smith reached 30 saves 11 times; 168 of his saves required at least four outs and 94 required two or more innings. Picked by a veterans committee in December.
