Plus: Faribault Woolen Mill retail store reopens
The 100-year floods seem to be on an accelerated timetable these days, which merits a review of flood insurance. Homeowner's policies do not include flood insurance. Although any property/casualty agent can potentially sell flood insurance, few insurance agents specialize in it, probably because of its low commission. Find a local agent who's knowledgeable in flood policies by calling 1-888-379-9531 or by going to www.floodsmart.gov, clicking on "agent locator" and putting in your ZIP code. The site can also estimate the risk profile of your property. Annual premiums are about $400 in low- to moderate-risk areas, said Robert Somers at Service Associates Insurance in St. Louis Park. A cheaper alternative is an endorsement on an existing policy that includes sewer backup or sump pump issues. Neither flood insurance nor an endorsement covers water in the basement due to cracks in the foundation or a high water table. A flood policy does not go into effect until 30 days after purchase.Faribault Woolen Mill retail store opens
If summer travels take you near Faribault, Minn., check out the newly reopened retail store at Faribault Woolen Mill (1500 2nd Av. NW., Faribault, 1-507-412-5510, www.faribaultmill.com). Although the historic mill closed in 2009, the factory and now the retail store are again open for business, selling blankets, throws, scarves and pillows made in Minnesota. Most items in the store are first-quality but about 30 percent are factory seconds. Popular sellers include the Soho plaid throw, a U.S. flag throw and Trapper striped scarves, also available for sale at the website. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.Discounted premium denim house parties
Add premium denim to items such as Tupperware, jewelry and lingerie sold through direct sales. But it's the discounted prices on the premium denim that make them a better fit. At Vault Denim (www.vaultdenim.com) most of the brands sell for about half of the retail price and each party has about 150 pairs for immediate sale. Styles are current, sell for $48 to $90 after the discount, and come in sizes 0 to 24 for women (including maternity), 32 to 40 for men and 4 to 14 for children. The next open house will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 20838 Holyoke Av., Lakeville. Dressing rooms will be available.
