The Star Tribune received two awards for its 2009 business news coverage in the Society of American Business Editors and Writers' annual Best in Business Journalism competition.

Among newspapers in the "giant" circulation category, with circulation of 325,000 or more, the Star Tribune's coverage of the Tom Petters guilty verdict received a Best in Business award for breaking news. The stories, by David Phelps, Liz Fedor and Jennifer Bjorhus, appeared Dec. 3. Aimee Blanchette contributed video reporting.

In the category for enterprise reporting, the Star Tribune received a Best in Business award for "Wastelands," a March 22 story by Chris Serres about insolvent construction lender Lakeland Construction Finance.

The New York Times led the competition with 13 awards.
