Service area: More than 980 food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior centers and after-school children's programs in 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

No longer tossed: 4.9 million pounds of nearly expired food from grocery stores, retailers and farmer's markets in the past year.

Fresh food: More than 1 million pounds of that was perishable fresh food, such as fruit, vegetables, bread and meat.

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
