Citibank says it will start charging a $7.50 monthly fee on Access and EZ checking accounts unless customers maintain a $1,500 balance. A look at some of the policies of the nation's biggest banks on basic checking accounts.

Specific terms may vary by region.

Bank: Monthly Service Fee

BANK OF AMERICA: $8.95

The fee can be waived if you meet one of these conditions:

_Set up direct deposit

_Open the account online

_Maintain a minimum balance of $1,500

CHASE: $6

The fee can be waived if you meet one of these conditions:

_Set up direct deposit

_Make at least five debit card purchases a month

CITIBANK: $7.50

The fee can be waived if you:

_Maintain a minimum balance of $1,500

PNC FINANCIAL: $0

_A $25 minimum is required to open an account.

WELLS FARGO: $8

The fee can be waived if you meet one of these conditions:

_Set up direct deposit

_Set up automatic transfers to a Wells Fargo savings account

_Set up automatic bill pay to a Wells Fargo credit line

_Maintain a $1,000 minimum balance

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
