Cub Foods ends gasoline promotion

Coupon program runs out of gas.

Last update: November 6, 2009 - 7:42 PM

Cub Foods said Friday it's shutting down an alliance with Holiday gas stations begun two years ago amid soaring gas prices. The deal awarded customers a one-cent-per-gallon discount for each $10 spent at Cub.

The last coupons go out on store receipts printed today, and all coupons must be redeemed by their expiration dates, said Cub spokeswoman LeeAnn Jorgenson. She said Cub Foods handed out about $20 million in coupons during the life of the program.

When asked why Cub decided to drop the program, Jorgenson said, "The change allows us to provide greater value to our customers in other ways."

Cub competitor Rainbow Foods has a similar program where customers can earn 10 cents off a gallon of gas at participating BP stations for every $50 spent at Rainbow.

Cub Foods, based in Stillwater and owned by Supervalu Inc. of Eden Prairie, has 58 stores in the metro area, and 15 more throughout the state.
