The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is one of the largest and most influential trade shows where small and large companies unveil their latest electronics products. 3M Co. previewed the MM200, a new design in the company's expanding miniature projection portfolio. The MM200 is the second generation of its mobile projection technology. A year ago, 3M debuted its first-generation mobile projection engine at the show. Since then, the company has integrated that engine into consumer platforms including the MPro110 -- the mobile projector that won the Grand Award in the gadget category of the Popular Science 2008 Best of What's New Awards. When integrated with a cell phone, handheld accessory or digital camera, the MM200 engine can project up to a 50-inch image while drawing only 1 watt of power. The MM200 uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon electronic imager and is illuminated with multicolored light-emitting diodes. Medtronic offers new surgery power console
Medtronic Inc. launched its integrated power console platform, the first multispecialty surgical power console for use in spinal, cranial and ear-nose-and-throat surgeries. The console powers the company's Midas Rex Legend EHS and Legend EHS stylus drills, used primarily in spinal and cranial applications, and the Straightshot M4 Microdebrider, Visao and Skeeter drills used in ear-nose-and-throat and neurotology procedures. The console also powers the new Midas Rex spine shaver, which allows for powered tissue removal during spinal surgeries. Medtronic will also design future powered instruments to run on the platform.

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.
Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
