Grocery shopper trends

What effects are higher energy prices having on your grocery purchases? A January 2008 survey of 1,017 shoppers by the Food Marketing Institute found these answers:

I cook more and eat out less: 71 percent

I purchase fewer luxury items: 67 percent

I buy more private-label than national-brand items: 60 percent

I eat more or use more leftovers: 58 percent

I purchase fewer food items overall: 48 percent

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
