Eagan-based Norcraft Companies Inc. announced Friday it will build a $7.1 million addition to its kitchen and bathroom cabinet factory in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The expansion, which more than doubles the factory's size, is expected to be finished next summer.
It will create 78,000 square feet of additional manufacturing space at its current facility, which has just 56,700 square feet.
The extra space will allow Norcraft to meet the growing demand for its Urban Effects branded cabinets, which are sold both in Canada and the United States, executives said. The extra room will also reduce the company's reliance on off-site warehousing and shipping.
Norcraft, which became a public company 10 months ago, makes custom and semi-custom cabinets for kitchens, dining rooms, bathrooms and mudrooms. It runs six U.S. and Canadian manufacturing plants and sells products in more than 20 states.
The expanded factory will focus on just one of the seven brands of products that Norcraft makes. In addition to Urban Effects, Norcraft markets cabinets under the names Mid Continent Cabinetry, Norcraft Cabinetry, UltraCraft, StarMark Cabinetry, Fieldstone Cabinetry, and Brookwood.
Norcraft was founded in Marshall, Minn., in 1966 as Marshall Millworks. Between 2003 and 2013, the company had been primarily owned by CEO Mark Buller, his relatives and investors such as SKM Equity Fund III and the Trimaran Fund II.
Last year's IPO raised $106.5 million for the company. Since going public, the stock has traded between $13.09 and $19.82 and closed up 2 cents to $15.51 on Friday.
