MONTICELLO NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Located: Monticello, Minn., 45 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, on the Mississippi River.
Owner: Xcel Energy.
In the news: Upgrade costs more than doubled during five-year project to $665 million. Xcel must prove costs were prudent in order to charge ratepayers.
Type: General Electric boiling-water reactor.
Output: 600 megawatts, enough to serve 500,000 homes; now capable of 671 megawatts.
Upgrade: Replaced and upsized major components to extend plant’s life and boost output by 12 percent; completed in July 2013.
License: First issued in 1970 for 40 years; later extended 20 years to 2030.
